Work Collection

This section marks all the work that I assisted in and how I assisted as well as the piece of solo work I did.

Week 1 – This introductory point of the project was the discussion and general plotting point of what the board game was and how it would play. Originally the pitch for the game was a much more complicated and bigger game that had players creating a community while also trying to balance out the environmental damage using counters and a much larger board.

Week 2 – The second week was the idea development and how this game comes together. The general basis of the game was to create a self-sustaining community without destroying the the players town, this game play style would show an emphasis on what different energy sources could do to the environment and what humans do to the planet. This idea was also double sided showing that smaller more environmentally aware power sources could be a lot better for the environment. We also decided on the board shape and size during this week, deciding on a hexagon shaped board to show a bit more of a difference to other board games as well as make it stand out a tad more.

Once we had the general feel of the game sorted we moved onto the theme of the game and how we wanted it to feel as well as main inspirations. For the original idea I wanted a 1950’s propaganda aesthetic, luckily this idea did stick along for the re-design and so we designed the game with this idea of a “The world is being destroyed, lead us to safety” style, similar to the propaganda found in the 1950’s e.g. The Red Scare. With this initial design I then began designing the first design for a poster. I moved into Photoshop and began a design that was very similar to a nuclear scare poster

Week 3 – Week 3 was a re-work of the overall project idea as well as deciding on the theme and box art. After several tries to get the original idea of the project working, we realized that this prototype idea was just far too complicated and time consuming to get it work, so instead we spent some time as a team simplifying the project in order to make it playable as well as a bit more fun. Shania eventually suggested that we remove the aspect of pollution counters and environmental damage and instead replaced it with a card system that has players moving across the board by answering correctly. While originally I was sad that the original idea was scrapped the replacement idea was a lot better and much less complicated when aimed at the target audience of 14+

Week 4 – This point of design was to develop the actual board game design as well as the counters, cards, card questions and box art re-design. For the card ideas, we wanted them to highlight the different kinds of environmental damage as well as what falls into them and what humans are doing to the planet, this idea sticks with the idea of the board game raising environmental awareness as well as retains some aspects of the original idea by showing man-made damage.

Before printing off the cards, Shania first re-designed the cover, taking the original idea and improving it before finally making it the final cover for the box (Final design on Shania’s page.) This design was then put on the back of the cards and the cards were printed off.

After week 4 a majority of the work was passed onto the rest of the team however, I then moved onto doing the voice over for the audio and video as well as being the main actor for it.

The last piece of work that I worked on was the team Logo for the solo work. For this section I took the name that we agreed on “Greta Thunberg Fan club.” Greta Thunberg is a young environmentalist advocate so in a sense we used the name to follow in her footsteps.

After deciding on the title, I then moved into Photoshop and began planning my design. For this design I wanted to represent a company that’s environmentally aware and wants to try and share these ideals with the world. The idea I came up with was an outreached hand with a tree planted into it, showing that we should all reach out and save the world.
