My Work

Week 1 – In week one we played some board games to get a better idea of the mechanics behind the games, and discussed any potential ideas for our own games. We decided to go with Finns concept.  We also had to do some research on climate change, I collected over 10 reliable sources and wrote 4 pages of information.

Week 2 – during week 2 we started to make the prototype for our game. As well as helping with the physical product (making counters and cards) I spent my time working out the in game monetary system and trying to ensure everything would add up mathematically.

Week 3 – in week 3  we created social media accounts to promote our board game, I made an Instagram account, Finn made a twitter account and Hannah made a facebook page.

Week 4 – Hannah set up a survey to help with our marketing and to gauge overall opinion of our board game, during this week I also continued to help make the physical aspects of the game (wrote and cut out more cards)

Week 5 – after realizing the game we were creating was much too complicated and completing it with the resources and time scale we had would be too difficult, Shania came to us with a much easier and accessible plan for a game that still kept the core concept. This week we also recorded a radio advert for which I wrote the script.

Week 6 – with our new game idea we also had to change some of the physical aspects of the game, during this week I created the box for the board and counters to go in as well as another box to hold the cards. I also continued to help Shania by cutting and backing the counters and cards.

Week 7 – almost at the end of our work we still had to create a video advert for our game and iron out all of the last physical elements. For the video I wrote a script and assisted in the filming by helping set up, doing sound and being in front of the camera for a couple of the shots. We quickly realised the script I wrote was too long for the 30 second ad so Shania condensed it. This week I also wrote a press release for the game and wrote the rule booklet.

New product release – Climate change inspired Board Game

Save Us Or Die!

Save Us Or Die is a revolutionary board game set to be released in the near future, using competition and fun through the known and loved medium of board games to educate players on the ever important subject of climate change.

Save Us Or Die is a question and answer based game where progress is determined on the players knowledge of climate change. This inventive way of broaching a topic as serious as climate change Is both engaging and accessible to everyone.

The board is split up into four different sections called ‘settlements’ the premise of the game is that due to climate catastrophes these settlements are no longer habitable, and the citizens need to evacuate to the safe zone located in the middle of the board. Players must correctly answer question cards in order to collect counters to bridge to the middle, leading their citizens to safety. With the added possibility of picking up a chance card, which can be either advantageous or detrimental to the player.

Emily Greenwood, one of the creators of Save Us Or Die said “while climate change is becoming a much more widely debated topic, there are still those left either uninterested or plain confused. Through the accessibility of this game we hope to open an easy dialogue about a difficult subject”

Part B – Solo work

For the second half of the summative task, I created a series of logos/emblems for our group. We came up with the company name ‘Greta Thunberg’s Fanclub’, which stuck until the end. I created 2 logos with the name ‘Greta Thunberg’s Fanclub’ and another logo which took the board games name ‘Save us or die’.

For my first logo, I created a dripping effect coming from the earth which is meant to resemble what climate change is doing to our world. The dripping effect I used is meant to show the disintegration of the earth and how it is slowly falling apart due to climate change, unless changes are made. I thought this logo design was simple, but sends a powerful message about what is happening to our world.

However, I thought that maybe this logo may have been too simple so I created a very different styled logo which took after the style of our board game which was a 1950s propaganda approach. The art style used in this logo is very similar to the art style which was used in propaganda during the 1950s e.g. nuclear scare propaganda posters, which inspired our board game.

For my third logo design, I reverted back to the same style in my first logo which showed the harm of climate change on our world. I felt this logo would have been more fitting as it shows we should care for our world and look after it, which is the message that Greta Thunberg sends. The hands around the world look as if they are embracing it.

Summative Task- Part B- Shania

Design and Render a Company Emblem

I decided to choose for the summative task part b to design and render a company emblem. The company name we came up at the beginning is ‘Greta Thunberg’s Fanclub’.

Greta Thunberg is a globally known environmental activist who focuses most of her campaigns on climate change. At 16 years old she has achieved quite a lot as well as TIME’s ‘Person of the Year’ award. Our group thought this was an appropriate name for our company given her links to climate change and global warming and also the fact she is part of the generation of youth which prompts inclusivity of people who admire her which is mostly young adults and teenagers.

  • Stage 1

For my company emblem my initial idea I that I wanted my emblem to resemble a patch that would look like it was sewn or embroidered onto a piece of fabric. I used a pine tree as the image and made this using 3 triangles and two rectangles for the bottom of the tree. I also used the scribble effect in Adobe Illustrator to create this embroidered effect.

It was in somewhat hard to come up with a simple image to represent something as complex climate change but I decided to go with a pine tree as I feel this reflects nature and the environment, the pine tree also symbolises longevity and wisdom which some people believe are traits of Thunberg’s Campaigns.

  • Stage 2

I decided to expand my idea of the pine tree which looked woven to creating a scouts like-looking badge. The easiest way to do this was just create a circular badge and place the tree in the centre of the badge.

  • Stage 3- Complete

I also ended up adding the text ‘Greta Thunberg’s Fanclub’ and warping the text so that it would fit the curvature of the circle.

I used a light blue colour for the fill colour of the badge to portray a sky blue background and I used a bright, vibrant orange outline for the circle to provide some contrast from all the dark greens and browns in the centre of the circle from the tree.

I feel as the company emblem I designed is interesting as the idea to make it look like a Scout Badge implies some key values that the scouts uphold such as to care for the environment and cooperation. These values can then be linked with this emblem thus our company. In addition Greta Thunberg is a great role model to the younger generation and also a symbol of hope for our future which I believe is the basic premise of everyone’s Board Game which is that they ‘hope’ to educate people about the effects of Global Warming.

Week 5

During this week, we scrapped our original idea as we realised it would be very complicated to play, and to create. From here, Shania presented us the idea of a game where answering questions correctly about climate change would allow you to progress through the board. The player who reached the middle of the board first would be crowned the winner. We chose to stick with our 1950’s propaganda theme which held until the end of the creation.

Week 4

survey link (https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/MVKMVSS) – During this week, I created a survey which would help us to further improve our board game. I created a series of questions which would each help with different aspects of our game. As our original idea was quite complicated, the survey was a good way of finding it whether people enjoyed a heavy and complicated game. From the survey, I was able to find out that most people preferred a game which didn’t require an awful lot of concentration and little complication.

Week 3

During this week, we created social media sites to help with the promotion of our board game. Finn and Emily set up a twitter and an Instagram page for our board game and I created a Facebook page. From here, we used these pages to post about our board game as it helped to get word out about the game. These pages were helpful when creating the survey too as there were many places for me to share it.

Week 2

During this week, we began working on the prototype of our board game where we came up with more ideas for our game. We decided on a hexagon shaped board as it would stand out from other board games and it worked well with our idea. Whilst creating our prototype, I wrote out potential ideas/scenarios to use on the cards for our board game – for example: “Your factory has been infested by rats! Shut it down!”, and from here the player would be forced to lose one of their factories. I also helped with the creation of the counters for our prototype.
